Understanding Registered Apprenticeships

What Is a Registered Apprenticeship?

A Registered Apprenticeship is a training model recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor where you earn a paycheck while learning a trade. It combines on-the-job training (OJT) with classroom instruction, and it leads to a nationally recognized credential when you complete the program.

Unlike traditional training where you pay tuition and then look for a job, apprentices are employed from day one.

How It Works

Every Registered Apprenticeship has three components:

1. On-the-Job Training (OJT) — You work under a licensed professional, learning the trade hands-on. Hours are tracked and reported to the DOL.

2. Related Technical Instruction (RTI) — Classroom or online coursework that covers the theory behind what you are learning on the job. This is where you study building codes, safety regulations, and technical skills.

3. Progressive Wage Increases — As you gain skills and complete milestones, your pay increases. Starting wages vary by trade, but apprentices typically earn $15-$25/hour and increase from there.

Apprenticeship Programs at Elevate

We currently offer Registered Apprenticeships in:

  • Electrical Apprenticeship — Hands-on electrical work with classroom instruction in NEC code, circuit theory, and safety.
  • HVAC Technician — Can be structured as an apprenticeship with employer partners who provide OJT hours.
  • Who Can Be an Apprentice?

  • You must be at least 18 years old (16 for some programs with parental consent)
  • No prior experience required — that is the whole point
